For those of you who want to play the game but don't want to spend the money. Here is the smallest installer I've found so far.
I found a Russian site that contains a mod that stripped down all the unnecessary files and only include the core files to play the game (something like the SC portable version). The installer is 95mb in size, and it extracts to any folder.
For online multiplayer, I have not tested it yet. I believe GR (GameRanger) and Voobly will ask you where the game is installed, and you have to find it. But remember, the .exe to start the game is now called aoc.exe, so you need to change this to age2_x1.exe for GR to be happy.
In addition, this version has a bonus feature! You can play the game in windowed mode! Meaning you can chat on MSN, watch youtube, stalk people on Facebook while playing the game! This is great for those of you who use dual monitors or just have a monitor that's super large! Check it out:
However, your screen resolution must be large enough for this to work. Otherwise, fullscreen mode will be set as default.
Also, you can choose to use always fullscreen mode if you want to. You just need to modify the config.xml file. Change the 'default' profile to 'fullscreen' profile.
